Maintenance Release: Magic Bullet Suite 11.1.2

The elves at Red Giant have been merrily working away on some updates to the Magic Bullet Suite, checking a few items off our lists to try and ensure your latest film project doesn’t end up looking like a lump of coal. This will also be the first Magic Bullet Suite installer that will not contain Denoiser 1.0 (more below).

Here are the hi-lights of Magic Bullet Suite 11.1.2:

PhotoLooks 1.5.2

  • Those of you installing PhotoLooks along with the entire suite may have noticed categories that show up in the Looks drawer that happen to be empty – this occurs because Looks created for Looks 2.0 used new tools and aren’t usable in PhotoLooks (yet). We’ve fixed things up for now so you wont see a bunch of empty categories – only categories that have Looks you want.
  • “Save Image As” in the Photo LooksBuilder was never meant to be left in the application and was not working correctly. It has been removed completely. Use the host app you launch PhotoLooks from to save your images.
  • For those of you who also use QuickLooks, there was a bug in the installer that would cause all of your QuickLooks presets to disappear after installing PhotoLooks. We’ve fixed this up.

Looks 2.0.4

  • For those of you using Looks 2.0 in Sony’s Vegas Pro on non-English 32-bit Windows systems, we’ve fixed up the truly annoying OMP error that pops up on your screen.

Colorista II 1.0.5

  • In Premiere Pro, dragging the power mask preview outline was not lining up with the actual mask. We’ve sorted this all out and it’s working great.

Grinder 1.5.1

  • The Timecode Start setting was always working in ‘Continuous’ mode – ‘Reset’ and ‘Time of Day’ were being ignored – all fixed up.
  • Choosing “Original + Timecode” as the main format option was causing the timecode to be off by a factor of 100. We’ve got the math all working now and you’ll get the results you’re looking for.

Bye-Bye Denoiser 1.0

OSX Lion and Red Giant – Happy Together at Last!
By Andrew Cheyne
Published on Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Hey all -

A while back, we gave an update on the status of our plugins running on OSX Lion: Roaring Through The Issues. Pretty much, it came down to some serious bugs in OS X Lion, that we could not control. However we did our best to communicate the issues with Apple, and we’re excited to say…

Breaking News! Today, Apple announced an update for OS X Lion: 10.7.2 and we’re happy to say that this update resolves the issues we have been seeing with Magic Bullet Looks 2, Colorista II, Primatte Keyer, and Knoll Light Factory running in Final Cut Pro on OSX Lion. We’ve been testing with the pre-releases of this OS X update and we can finally give it a thumbs up!

Thanks for your patience on this. Getting these bugs resolved was entirely out of our hands, but we’re happy that our dialog with Apple resulted in a  a fantastic problem-solving update!

Enlightened Looks in Mumbai
By Sarah Wise
Published on Thursday, September 15th, 2011

LIA – Lab Inter Arts, (based at the University Mozarteum Salzburg, Austria), is a performance-oriented workshop headed by Prof. Helmi Vent, in which projects on various themes are developed together with the participants on location through improvisational processes. When the group took their performance work to India recently, they faced more than one or two challenges.

From the outset they knew that financial resources for the documentary would be limited and coupled with environmental issues (monsoon season); it was not going to be a straightforward project. The story of this documentary is enlightening in every sense of the word and we asked Martin Gerhard Hantich, the Technical Director at LIA, how Magic Bullet Looks gave definition to some of the more color challenging shots.

Martin told us: “We had to travel light (in overly crowded trains), so there were no lights, bouncers or a larger crew; it was me together with an Indian camera assistant who had a lot of other duties to handle, like discussing with officials or translating. I was capturing sound and video material at the same time while chasing our performers through the crowded streets of Mumbai. The relatively high humidity and heat, coupled with the spontaneous nature of the project, made it quite a challenge.

“Most activities were chosen on a day-to-day schedule at many different locations, so there was hardly any time for thorough planning, manual white-balance or all of the other amenities you have when you’re shooting feature or in a more ‘controlled’ environment. It was more like ‘this performer will start the performance there and whatever will happen – we’ll see’.

“I knew from the beginning that this rather ‘instantaneous’ way of working will require some adjustment in the post, also because the light situation at that time of the year in Mumbai was far from ideal with a hazy smog dome covering the city most of the time.

An example of the footage before and after Magic Bullet Looks

“Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks gave me the power to easily adjust the overall look and give the documentary the ’16mm’ appearance I wanted, set highlights where there were none and tweak the entire picture. Without Looks, it would have been way harder to achieve all of that while maintaining a small production budget.”

And the Winner Is

Congratulations to Tom Howe, winner of the Senser Video Competition.

Back in March UK band Senser, who have been described as Rap Rock, Industrial hip hop and even Rapcore, announced a competition to produce a video for their new single ‘2 3 Clear’.

The band made green-screen and live footage available for the track and gave the general public full creative license to do with it as they wish. After much debate and deliberation, Tom clinched the first prize with his minimal but clearly defined use of effects, amazing sense of space and depth and brilliant dynamics. And Tom was pretty excited to win.

Magic Bullet Looks is effing ace. Since installing it, I’ve discovered a whole realm of different ways my footage could look in the time that it would normally take to find one half-decent look using a bunch of standard FCP effects crammed on top of each other — and the results are a hundred times better! Now I can create shots that look fresh out of Hollywood! Well, almost… Can’t wait to get my mittens on more Magic Bullet products!”

Maintenance Releases: Magic Bullet Looks 2.0.1 & Colorista II 1.0.3
By Andrew Cheyne
Published on Friday, August 26th, 2011

Grab the Latest updates for both Magic Bullet Looks and Magic Bullet Colorista II Here:

Note: Since all of our Magic Bullet products now install through one Suite installer, you only need to download the update once – it will contain the maintenance release for both products.

So, what’s new?

Magic Bullet Colorista II 1.0.3

  • The biggest fix here was to allow Colorista II to run properly again on non-English systems.
  • We also fixed up our keyboard shortcut handling for Colorista II in After Effects – in previous releases, you probably noticed it didn’t work the greatest – it’s all working great now!

Magic Bullet Looks 2.0.1

  • As with Colorista II, the biggest fix for a lot of users is that Looks will now run properly on non-English systems.
  • We fixed an issue with Looks causing pixelation in FCP 7 when using the Upper or Lower Field Dominance Sequence Settings.
  • Fixed some issues in the Looks Builder interface where the delete key wasn’t working properly and you would encounter some weird beeps.
  • Addressed an issue with Looks in Premiere Pro CS5 where the preview image could end up cropped in the LooksBuilder.
  • The Looks Theatre inside the Looks Builder interface would always start displaying Looks from the “Basic” category – it will now show you looks based on the category you’ve selected.

As always, you can find updates for all of our products HERE.

Nice Day for Fast Wedding
By Sarah Wise
Published on Monday, July 11th, 2011

“The Philippines is a fierce competitive ground for wedding filmmakers and I feel that Looks and Mojo gives me an edge.”

Jason Magbanua has been an event videographer for over 10 years and has a very special talent for Same Day Edits (SDE).

SDEs are essentially a short video produced from the footage of the wedding shot earlier in the day, usually only incorporating footage from pre-ceremony, ceremony and post ceremony, which is then shown at the reception as a recap of the wedding.

Jason has an incredible gift for capturing those personal moments but in a very unobtrusive way, and not surprisingly has permanent waiting list of couples wanting his services. We were excited to learn that Jason was a fan of Magic Bullet Looks and Mojo.

Jason told us “Magic Bullet gives me all the control I need for grading. Render times are fast even for Same Day Edits where time is of the essence. The Philippines is a fierce competitive ground for wedding filmmakers and I feel that Looks and Mojo gives me an edge.”

As an internationally recognized speaker who has been a featured presenter at events from San Francisco to Sydney and the Winner of dozens of WEVA Creative Excellence Awards, Jason has won multiple Gold CEAs for Wedding-Day Edit production. Based in Makati City, the Philippines, he is the subject of Bio, a collaborative film project developed by five award-winning Filipino studios and premiered at Weddings at Work (W@W) Videofest 2011.

Having watched Bio, I can see why Jason is popular with his clients, outside of his talent as a wedding videographer. There is a real warmth and affection for Jason from the brides and grooms who hire him. He seems like a truly nice guy who you’d want at your wedding, with or without that creative camera. The Wizardry Of Oz
By Sarah Wise
Published on Monday, June 13th, 2011

Behind-the-scenes videos have really developed into a mini-genre in their own right. No more bored-looking talent, coffee-swigging crew or comedy outtakes. One featurette that illustrates this point perfectly is the work of one Oz Smith.

Oz, in conjunction with Turquoise Branding, put together a sequence to introduce the biggest spectacle on the F1 racing calendar, the Monaco Grand Prix. Footage of BBC presenter Jake Humphrey in front of a green-screen was used to create a lively, fast-paced look at several hours in the studio and given a final polish with Magic Bullet Looks. You can see the final film here:

Oz has been a freelance motion designer, director and animator for over 12 years and is based in London. As well as designing and directing on-screen graphics and idents for larger channel brands such as NRK in Norway, Discovery Channel, Nederland 1, 2 and 3, Abudhabi TV, and BBC Global News he has worked on title sequences, music videos, exhibition and graphics for charity organizations.

Just a quick glance at his site shows the depth of his creative abilities. In a previous collaboration with Turquoise, Oz was involved with the titles and event graphics for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf, incorporating the ‘Feel Your Heart Beat’ tag line. We were thrilled to see that Trapcode Particular and Trapcode Form were used in making the heart logo come to life, and we asked Oz to tell us more about the process.

“I use Trapcode software for almost every job I work on – the versatility is amazing for realising ideas, whether it is the key graphic element of a project, or a subtle finessing tool to add details and grading at the end to lift production values. I find it just as useful for working on purely graphic jobs as well as for live action compositing. I am always being dug out of holes using Trapcode software when the client says ‘we don’t have much money, but we want this to look expensive!’”
