Primatte Keyer Used for More than 80 Summer Blockbuster Effects Shots
San Francisco, CA, July 22, 2003 – Red Giant Software today announced that the innovative post production house, The Orphanage, used Primatte Keyer to complete more than 80 visual effects shots in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. With Primatte Keyer, The Orphanage was able to extract mattes from over 22,000 frames of HD footage in less than two weeks. The forthcoming summer blockbuster from Dimension Films will be in theatres on July 25, 2003.
The making of Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over presented a unique visual effects challenge for The Orphanage because all the shots had to be created for 3-D presentation using the red/blue anaglyph process. This approach demands that each shot be created twice, but from slightly different angles—essentially doubling the number of frames required. The Orphanage’s advanced compositing work includes the eight minutes of the movie known as the “lava surf” sequence.
Faced with keying thousands of frames in a short turnaround time, The Orphanage needed a fast and robust solution. Primatte Keyer, an After Effects plug-in for both Macintosh and Windows, eased the workload with its 16-bit support and ability to key motion-blurred edges, varying transparency levels, and foreground elements tinted with screen color. Primatte Keyer’s interface lets the artist sample the image directly making it much more productive than other solutions that require complicated slider controls.
“We chose Primatte Keyer because of its unique ability to extract mattes from a variety of greenscreen situations. The user interface is simple to use, but produces excellent results that saved us crucial time by reducing the need for rotoscope clean-up of the mattes,” said Stuart Maschwitz, CTO and Co-Founder at The Orphanage.

Primatte Keyer is an After Effects plug-in used by editors, effects artists, and film professionals. The software, which works on both Macintosh and Windows platforms, enables artists to extract keys from any color background for compositing. Users can choose foreground/background areas of an image and selectively reduce edge spill and transparency problems—all directly in the After Effects composite window.
