Magic Bullet Suite Used for 20-Concert MTV Series

San Francisco, CA, August 16, 2004 – Red Giant Software today announced that MBS Productions used Magic Bullet Suite for a second year in a row to complete the openers and segment bumpers for Nokia Presents Hard Rock Live, a 20-concert series aired on MTV. With Magic Bullet Suite, the Manhattan-based post house was able to give pre-concert footage a 16 mm film look that was artistically differentiated from the live musical performances shot on BetaCam.

The show’s line-up includes hit bands and artists, Hoobastank, Maroon 5, Kanye West, New Found Glory, The Darkness, Yellowcard, Trapt, Nelly, and many more. The series began broadcasting weekly on July 7, 2004.

Magic Bullet Suite is a set of After Effects plug-ins developed by The Orphanage for de-interlacing and de-artifacting footage; converting DV footage to 24 frames per second (film speed); applying film treatments; cropping footage to any standard format; and ensuring compliance with broadcast TV standards.

“Coming into the project at the editing phase, we were looking for a way to artistically differentiate the openers and segment bumpers yet not interfere with the overall feel of a live performance. It was not possible to ask for the footage to be shot on a particular camera or with a certain filter or look. With Magic Bullet Suite, we could exercise our artistic flair and achieve results similar to what we would aim for if we were able to call the shots,” said Jason Diamond, Partner at MBS Productions.

“At MBS Productions, we wear many hats. It is hard to be, simultaneously, an expert animator, editor, motion graphics artist, compositor, and color corrector. But with Magic Bullet Suite, it makes it easy to understand the color correction process. The software provides such a solid starting point—which is truly unique for a plug-in—that I can immediately start the touch-up process with easy to apply preset Looks and then get more in-depth as necessary to further tweak my ideas. I am not aware of any other visual effects plug-in that offers such a short learning curve,” continued Diamond.
