Red Giant Software Unveils New Film Restoration Tool

San Francisco, CA, January 31, 2005 – Red Giant Software, publisher of a line of professional desktop tools including Magic Bullet and Knoll Light Factory, today announced the availability of Film Fix. This new cutting-edge technology consists of a set of plug-ins designed for documentary filmmakers and post production studios that need film and video restoration tools on the desktop. Using Film Fix, After Effects users can restore tears, remove dust and dirt particles, and stabilize footage originated on film and video resolution material transferred from film. The processing is nearly automatic, provides high-quality output, and rivals dedicated high-end systems.

Film Fix utilizes a fast, accurate motion estimation system, which processes pixel-accurate image data at different scales similar to the way the human eye views the world. These powerful, intelligent algorithms allow it to identify problems such as dust, dirt, and tearing despite complex motion in the footage. Once identified, these artifacts are quickly and naturally removed.

Film Fix is an ideal desktop restoration system competitive with dedicated high-end platforms, when combined with After Effects’ interactive touch-up tools and robust render farm capabilities. The workflow allows efficient processing of archival material for output to high definition or DVD.

Pricing and Availability

Film Fix for After Effects 6.0 or later (Windows only) is available now for $1,995 USD. (Macintosh support will be added in Q2 2005.) Film Fix also includes full support for unlimited multi-client rendering through an After Effects render farm.

 The technology for Film Fix was developed by a team led by Green Parrot Pictures’ Anil Kokaram, a pioneer in motion picture restoration with over 15 years of experience in the field. Dr. Kokaram’s work includes the book “Motion Picture Restoration” and more than 60 papers on general video processing—40 of which are specifically on video and film restoration. Dr. Kokaram is a Senior Lecturer at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
