Red Giant Software Announces New Film Restoration Tool

San Francisco, CA, September 8, 2004 – Red Giant Software today announced Film Fix, a set of plug-ins designed for documentary filmmakers and post production studios that need film and video restoration tools. Using Film Fix, After Effects and Digital Fusion users can restore tears, remove dust and dirt particles, and stabilize footage originated on film and video resolution material transferred from film. The processing is nearly automatic and provides high-quality output.

  • Repair seams with the only automated tear-repair tool on the market.
  • Stabilize footage with fast, software-based 2D translation.
  • Automatically eliminate severe non-linear inter-frame brightness fluctuations.
  • Remove dust and sparkle defects using motion detection information.
  • Render across a set of networked computers to execute full collective CPU potential.

“We are pleased to be working in conjunction with Green Parrot Pictures, a true pioneer in the industry with comprehensive experience in the field of film and video restoration. Together we are moving their unique technology from the academic world to real-world production pipelines,” said Sean Safreed, Partner at Red Giant Software. “Film Fix is the first set of automated tools available to average users. No special skills or knowledge is required to repair archival or degraded footage.”

Film Fix utilizes a fast, accurate motion estimation system, which processes pixel-accurate image data at different scales similar to the way the human eye views the world. These powerful, intelligent algorithms allow it to identify problems such as dust, dirt, and tearing despite complex motion in the footage. Once identified, these artifacts are quickly and naturally removed.

With today’s compositing systems and Film Fix, users can efficiently process archival material for output to high definition or DVD. After Effects and Digital Fusion provide interactive touch-up tools and robust render farm systems that in combination with Film Fix make these desktop applications ideal restoration systems competitive with dedicated high-end platforms.

Pricing and Availability

Film Fix for After Effects (Windows only) will be available for $1,995 USD starting October 1st. (Digital Fusion support will be added in late October.) Film Fix includes full support for unlimited multi-client rendering through an After Effects render farm. Special pre-order pricing of $1,495 is available for users that order before September 30, 2004.
