"Trapcode Form was used extensively in our work on Terminator Salvation to generate point clouds for the opening studio logos and machine vision sequences. From our earliest tests we were intrigued by the idea of a machine understanding the three dimensional space it exists within, and found point clouds to be a great visual cue in expressing that. Form allowed us to generate and modify the point clouds within After Effects, giving us immediate results and flexibility without needing to jump back to a 3D application.
Our final pipeline involved doing a 3D track of the original shot, recreating the scene in 3D with rough geometry, and rendering a depth map of the scene from a stationary camera with parallel perspective. We then used the depth matte to displace the Form particles on their Z axis. When the Form particles are correctly positioned and viewed through the match moved 3D camera, they align to the original plate.”
